Blackmagic RAW file sizes

So, my Blackmagic 6k Pocket Cinema Camera arrived a couple of weeks back, and I have been doing some testing with it, and I wanted to share something interesting… The Video sizes are large! Very LARGE. Shooting 6k Blackmagic 12:1 RAW, a 1-minute 4-second video at 30FPS is 5.2GB in size. and the 2-minute 22-second clip is 11.65GB. The first video I shot with it and posted to Youtube about my Quad 2.5Gb/s router took 27 gigs of RAW video for around 5 min of Youtube video (the final exported 4k Video was under 400MB!) With all this said, my MacBook Pro 16" with M1 Max and 64GB RAM had no issues processing or working with it, so at least there is that…

Testing Forestry.io

So, it’s been a while since I used Forestry.io as an editor… Going to try to give it a shot again for this… Should make posting a little easier…

Installing Cloudfalre Warp on Windows Server

I run Windows Server 2022 as my main OS on GodBoxV3, my workstation. When you try install Cloudflare Warp on it, it installs but fails to start. The issue is that Cloudflare Warp needs the Wireless LAN Service to be enabled. To enable, from an elevated Powershell Prompt, run

Install-WindowsFeature wireless-networking

Reboot the machine and Cloudflare Warp should now start.

New Camera on the way

I did something a little silly… I just ordered a new Camera… a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K. I also purchased a 128GB CFAST 2 card plus a Sandisk Pro CFAST 2.0 Reader. Should be here in the next week or so… 6K video will be interesting. Plus, it uses the same EF Mount lenses I currently use for my Canon 5DS DSLR. More soon on it, plus some sample videos up on the Youtube Channel.

Tested Positive

So, it’s been a few days, but I did a new antigen test today and I tested positive… I’m now in lockdown for a week + 3 days where I need to be careful… still not feeling 100% today. going to spend the day watching tv or sleeping…

Covid Is Kicking My Ass

Ok, I say it’s kicking my ass, but it is defiantly not as bad as some people got it. Its the bad flu. I have had 3 full dosses of the vaccine, so I am as dossed up as I can be. But I still feel like I have been hit by a trail being driven by Mike Tyson. Hot honey, lemon and whiskey drink will hopefully help me sleep… fingers are crossed.

Next iPhone Wishlist

I have been thinking recently about what I want to see in the next iPhone. I currently have a 12 Pro Max and I am due for an upgrade around December of this year, which means Apple will have released the 14 Pro Max at that stage. So, what do I want to see in it? This is just a random bloke with some ideas… I have no insider knowledge…

  • USB C: this is a big one. iPhones now shoot ProRes Video, and 1 Min of 1080P ProRes is around 1GB inside and 1 Min of 4K ProRes is 6GB. on USB 2 (which is what is used for Lightning) the MAX you could download is 480Mbit/s or 60MBytes/s, so a 1 Min Video will take nearly 2 min to download. Not a massive time, but still a pain. USB C (be it 3, 3.1, 3.11 for Workgroups or whatever they are calling it these days) or Thunderbolt would make downloads a LOT faster, and possibly allow for faster charging and new accessories options (Ethernet, external video recorders (see below), external Storage and more.)
  • External Recording of Video: Pro cameras usually have the option of a clean RAW video signal over an HDMI connection for external recording. A nice to have would be allowing the iPhone to do the same. And if it’s not an external recorder, even an external storage device. Think USB C SSD or the like. It probably won’t happen… Apple wants you to buy the bigger storage option and don’t want it to be expandable… But it would be nice.
  • Better camera: iPhone cameras are good, don’t get me wrong, but 12MP for the main shooter seems a little small… My main camera, a Canon 5Ds, shoots 50MP images. Yes, it’s a Pro DSLR, but the iPhone is a Pro Phone aimed at Pro Videographers and Photographers… Bumping the main shooter to 48MP would allow 8K video recording too!
  • Recording from external cameras, or even other iPhones: Probably not something that would be in an iPhone, maybe an iPad Pro, but as part of that external recording part, being able to hook another camera, say a GoPro or even Canon DSLR up to your device via USB C and start recording in ProRes to internal storage would be very cool. If it was added to the iPad Pro, you could record from multiple cameras with the M1 chip. 1 or more iPhone 14 Pro Max’s hooked to a USB C Hub and hooked to a single iPad Pro, with an external SSD and all video shown on the screen and recorded to the SSD. Throw in a GoPro that does not do ProRes and let the iPad record it in ProRes to disk in real time. Nice workflow saver.
  • Center Stage for the front camera, along with a better front camera: I have wanted Apple to add a USB port to the Apple TV to allow you to do Video calls since the pandemic hit, but it probably won’t happen. So, using your iPhone as a camera for your AppleTV is the next best option. Give it a better front-facing camera and enable Center Stage and you will be good to go!

Can’t think of anything else off the top of my head… but that would be enough to start with.

Initial Post

I have been trying to write quick notes about what’s going on in a journal, but 1: I can’t read my handwriting, and 2: It becomes painful to write too much… I do plan on still writing stuff in a journal since I kind of want my handwriting to get better… it’s been a LOT of years since I have had to write anything of any length on paper, but this makes things a little easier for writing quick stuff.

So, as my first post, some quick notes:

  • The mammy has covid… or at least it looks like she does. The antigen test came back positive… Mine came back negative but will do another one tomorrow. My throat is sore, and I have been pretty tired for the last few days… More tests tomorrow.
  • after waiting nearly 6 months, my 2021 Mac Book Pro 16" with M1 Max and 64GB RAM plus 1TB SSD arrived yesterday. It was a BTO and was ordered from the shop back in October… It’s a VERY nice machine. Benchmarks are due on the main site eventually.
  • This site is built with Hugo and written in VS Code. It uses GitHub for storage and Cloudflare Pages for building and hosting.

That’s enough for a first post. More later…
